How to Create an Animated Film – The Story of Nyosha

Six years ago, an idea was born—to write and create a handcrafted short animated film telling the story of my grandmother, Naomi Kapel, a Holocaust survivor. This is the story of Nyusha, a ten-year-old Jewish girl living with her mother, Chipa, in the village of Wengrov, Poland. Nyusha’s dream was to buy a pair of shoes she adored. Since she didn’t have enough money, the shoemaker agreed to sell her just one shoe and promised to keep the other for her. Determined, Nyusha started working in the village, doing any job she could, and eventually managed to save enough money.
But the merciless war stood between Nyusha and her dream. In the midst of a brutal roundup, as she faced death and witnessed the heartbreaking moment when her mother was torn away from her and taken onto a truck, Nyusha believed that her shoes were what made the Nazi soldier holding her spare her life.
A combination of animation techniques blends dream and reality, bringing Nyusha’s personal story to life. The film is created using two animation styles—stop-motion and traditional 2D animation.
A Stop-Motion Film Made of Salt – How It All Began

I’m sitting here, in one of the northernmost places in Norway. In front of me, snow-covered mountains and breathtaking fjords. Two days ago, right here, in this crazy cold, was the world premiere of my first film as an independent animator. The film was accepted into a prestigious film festival in Norway, and they invited me to attend the premiere. So how did I end up here? How did all this happen? Believe me, I still have no idea.

Behind the Scenes – Stop Motion Commercial – Fitness Sponsorship

In animation (and especially in stop motion), the planning phase is critical for achieving a great result. Since we shoot so many images when creating animation, every tiny detail must be meticulously prepared in advance. To the extent that, in my view, filming the actual video is just like hitting Print—everything is set, we know exactly what moves and at what pace, and all that’s left is:
Move, shoot. Move, shoot. Move, shoot.
Liran Kapel on The Gradient Podcast!

Liran is an animator and the owner of Liran Kapel – Stop Motion & Animation Studio. The episode was recorded in May, during the lockdown. Despite the uncertainty and concerns, I was immediately swept up by Liran’s energy—she simply radiates positivity! Our conversation was truly fascinating, covering everything from establishing a studio in Israel and navigating life as a freelancer to how animation serves as a healing tool for women who have left the cycle of violence.
How did we create the cashback videos from paper clips?

As a freelancer and business owner, you are constantly having to make choices. Choosing a business name/branding/graphic language/colors. Choosing what to promote/where to promote, when and how, and of course the hardest and most critical choice of all – choosing what to order for lunch…
Art by Yolo – How did we create the video series?

You are invited to discover the fascinating work process that included illustrations, especially sweet frame design, and “behind-the-scenes” photography of the process. In recent years, illustration on the iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil has become a serious competitor to good old Photoshop. Working on the iPad is much more convenient and faster, and the software is super professional and allows you to work just like in Photoshop (and even better).
Everything is a choice.

There’s nothing we love more than releasing a shiny new video from our studio! But until the exciting final point, there is a long road full of thought and hard work. Come get a behind-the-scenes look at the creative thinking process – and in essence – how do you come up with a winning and effective idea for a video?!
Why Stop-motion works so well on social media

Hi! I’m Liran, and in my studio, we create short and focused stop motion videos, that always work. Why do they work so well? First of all, they are super fun to create. But mostly, it is because they can tell a great story inthe best visual, fun, and effective way possible! The part I love exploring in my work is how cinematic elements are scattered into the content, and that creates better-focused ads that are artistic and fun to consume!
How we created – a stop-motion paper cutout video for the KKL-JNF!

How we created an entire world out of paper pieces and managed to tell a story through them. One of the things I love most about the nature of my studio is the rich diversity of animation styles. Even during my studies, I really liked exploring different animation techniques, trying things I hadn’t seen before (like, for example, a film made of broken glass, an attempt to create stained glass in animation. A film made of peanut butter, after which I didn’t eat a banana for about six months, and other crazy things).
